ESTONIAN  GYMNASTICS  FEDERATION

Gymnastics is one of the oldest fields of sports in the whole world as well as in Estonia. The first record of organized gymnastic activities in Estonia originates from the first half of the 19th century.

In the middle of the century the first German gymnastic societies were established in Tallinn and in Tartu. They took the initiative of organizing the first gymnastic festivities in 1863 in Tartu.

In the 1870-s joining gymnastics into national movement took place. In 1876 parish clerk and schoolteacher Jüri Soo organized the first Estonian gymnastics festival at Laiuse, in the district of Jõgevamaa. He took the gymnastic festivities in Tartu of German gymnastic societies as an example. The festival of 1876 may be considered as the beginning of Estonian gymnastic activity – in 2006 the 130th anniversary of the first Estonian gymnastic festival can be celebrated. In addition to men’s gymnastics on apparatus, also new fields of gymnastics came into being: women’s gymnastics, mass gymnastics and various directions of dance and rhythmic movement.

The 1920-s saw the organizational development of Estonian sports in general as well as gymnastics. In 1925 Ernst Idla – a young and vigorous man who had studied at the University of Physical Education in Berlin – started arranging Estonian gymnastic life. Owing to his initiative Estonian Gymnasts’ Federation was founded in 1934. Organizing the Estonian Games in 1934 and in 1939 was set as the primary task. The main emphasis was laid on mass gymnastics – approximately ten thousand gymnasts took part in the Games.

In 1940 all unions, societies and federations – including Estonian Gymnasts’ Federation – were liquidated by the soviet power.  During post-war years soviet control system was established in Estonian sports management. In order to promote competitive gymnastics, federations of sports and rhythmic sports gymnastics as part of the Sports Committee of ESSR, were formed.

In connection with the gained independence of Estonia, in 1989 Estonian Olympic Committee was reinstated and the entire Estonian sports system was reorganized. Estonian Gymnastics Association – uniting all organizations engaged in gymnastic activities – started leading Estonian gymnastics. Mehis Pilv was elected as President of Estonian Gymnastics Association.

On the 1st of May in 1992 Estonian Gymnastics Association joined the membership of the Union of European Gymnastics (UEG). At the Congress of the Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG) on July 18th in 1992, Estonian Gymnastics Association was admitted to membership of FIG.

In connection with the changes in organizational structure, in 1995 Estonian Gymnastics Federation (EGF) was established, which is considered as the legal successor of Estonian Gymnasts’ Federation founded in 1934. Mehis Pilv continued as President of Estonian Gymnastics Federation. Today EGF unites 44 member clubs.

Since 1993 our representatives have belonged to the membership of international gymnastics organizations - Viktor saaron as a member of Executive Commitee of UEG since 1993 and janika Mölder as a member of the Council of FIG from 2000 to 2004.
